Chapter 76
A Gentle Approach
a
People begin life soft and tender
At death they end up hard and rigid
Trees and grass begin life soft and supple
At death they end up hard and brittle
Hence the hard and inflexible are followers of the dead
And the soft and yielding are followers of the living
b
Thus, the inflexible and unyielding army will fall
by their own weight
Just as hard wood will be cut down
The hard and inflexible will occupy the Earth below
While the soft and yielding will inherit the Earth above
